Read medicine at your leisure!

If you enjoy reading about medicine in your leisure or just need a break from revision, without stepping too far from medicine then here are a few books for you.

Peculiar Neurology Stories by Oliver Sacks

It was suggested to us that we read some of 'Sacks' stories when we studied neurology in the first year of med-school. I have only read one of his books (probably the most famous 'The man who mistook his wife for a hat') but found it entertaining and certainly useful in helping me to better understand certain neurological presentations. Below are few other titles by Oliver Sacks, which will be worth a read if there anything like the one I read.

The First Season of 'House'

I can't wait til I'm a house officer, then I'll get to do all the amazing things they do in House...or maybe not!

Sadly for us we won't get to perform emergency cerebral embolectomies on our patients but I guess the next best thing is to watch the H/O on house do it! Probably the most unrealistic of all hospital dramas but admittedly very addictive, and great for honing your diagnostic skills!!

Take your mind off revising by shopping

If you're tired of revising and need some motivation, why not have a look for the watch you'll be able to afford once you've qualified. Or else, just have a browse and maybe treat yourself to something, anything to take your mind off revision for a bit.

Its medical...but funny!?

This hilarious comedy is about medical students and junior Dr’s, nurses and other hospital staff. It’s about everyday amusing things that occur in the hospital and the relationships that exist between the staff. The ongoing relationship between the main character (the med student/Jr doc) and his consultant provides much of the comedy.

Basically his consultant treats him like an idiot, refusing to talk to him and insulting him on a regular basis. This may sound familiar if you've had a surgical rotation! You’ll probably find that quite a few of the goings on in this comedy ring close to home, making it all the more amusing. Click on the pictures to read more about Scrubs or to order from Amazon.

Buy ER on DVD..then sell it back to amazon!!

ER needs no introduction; no doubt the best hospital drama to date. There are strong underlying storylines about the characters as well as exciting medical emergencies that take place within and around this Chicago hospital. The medical content in this programme is really accurate and often a useful revision reminder; at least that’s what I tell myself when I’m watching it instead of revising!

Each series retails in Amazon at around the £20-25 mark with free delivery so its good value for money. I’ve tended to watch one episode per evening after revising. It sounds sad but when you’ve been studying all day you’d be surprised how much you look forward to it and it maintains a medical mindset! Once you’ve watched it you can just sell it on Amazon again for around the same price! Click on the pictures to view them in Amazon.
